Mitch’s Roundup Australia, Dan’s and 1st Choice, week starting 11 August 2011

Hey people,

Firstly I just wanted to add a catchup from last week:

Wynns

If you missed the Wynns Coonawarra Estate promotion of their new release wines last “Wynnsday“, don’t worry. They are, and always probably will be, very good value for money.

Wine writers world-wide are amazed at how a Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon of such quality (ie normally speaking of the black label) can be offered for below $30.  If you want to get a red to celebrate a birth/wedding year to put away for 20 years, and is reasonably priced, this is your bet.

This weeks sales promos:

As always, I assume the advertised prices from the 2 big boys (dans and 1st Choice) will be matched by each other,,,ie A=B.

In a maybe not so interesting side note, I recently read that 1st choice may be changing its name to “Coles Liquor Superstore” and adding even more locations.  Wow, what an appealing name. Hm yeah.

Anyway this week of all their advertised stuff, I would tell you to try :

1) Bubbly: Grant Burge Pinot Noir/Chardonnay NV for $17.80

EDIT: After a second tasting of this, I recommend you just get the Jacobs Creek Pinot noir/Chardonnay Sparkling for $7. It is just as good and will save you $10.

Apart from the really cool bottle, this is special occasion class Aussie champagne from a great producer from the Barossa Valley. Normal price is around $24, but I have seen it on shelf (price matching) as low as $16.50.

This is a good price and pulling this one out at a romantic dinner will put some points on the board. Expect to pay $50+ for French champagne of this quality.

The jacobs creek is a decent alternative for $7 if you are more budget conscious.

2) Red: Reschke 2007 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon $10.40 (dans)
Highly spruiked by the brochure, this is Reschke’s lower range “postcard wine”, as in “their other wine is a rolls royce/ 100 bucks” and worth a try. Coonawarra is one of the most respected growing areas in the world and this family has been a landholder there for 100 years, but only started producing in 1998.

When a producer has a roles royce wine range, then they tend to look after their mini minors quite ok as well.

Look for weight, black currant, cherry and the typical mint/eucalypt tastes which are typical of Cab Sauvs of Coonawarra, all for a price of less than 3 coffees.

3) White: Brown Brothers Moscato for $10.40

I was really lost picking this cause I am personally not a big fan at all of Moscato BUT reports say it is one of the biggest growth market wines around at the moment. Slightly bubbly, sweet and fruity but not “added sugar sweet” like the cheapies: I can just imagine whole groups of “girl’s nights in” watching Sex and the City, American Housewives or Top Model gulping bottles of this and loving it.

Brown Brothers is a legendary producer of Australia for alternative grape varieties at good prices. The original italian versions of this stuff sell for 3 times the price, and many wine nerds pick Moscato as an insiders secret, worth it just for the experience, but by no means a man’s wine.

For a man’s wine, get the Charles Cimicky Trumps 2008 for around $15,,,big Barossa shiraz beating its chest…oh yeah.
