Just my recommendations for the dan murphy’s specials 30 june 2011
Gold:
Yalumba Y Series, Viognier, SA $8.90
You might have already seen that I am a huge Yalumba fan and I think you have stock up on a Y series when it is under $9 (this series can retail for anything from $9-16). The biggest family run business in Oz, super value/quality wines at every level and big promoters of Viognier, a fat stone (ie peach) fruity white that is famous in the Rhone Valley with wines at exorbitant prices. When made well its a great white, and these guys are pretty darn good at it.
Silver:
Cambrian Rock Shiraz, Heathcote Victoria, $13.60
A Dan’s specialty, this is a real crowd pleaser and excellent value for the price. If you are into tradition, real wineries and a history, then this is not your wine. If you want a well made good value Shiraz from one of the best Shiraz producing areas in Australia (ie Heathcote) then this is your baby. Only a saving of about $1 so you can pick it up anytime.
Bronze:
Taylors Riesling , Clare Valley SA, $12.40
Taylors is family run, and in the Aus Wines family tradition initiative as a legendary family of Australian wine. Riesling is an awesome (German) white variety that is getting its respect now (its not sweet!!!), and the Clare Valley, 2 hours north of Adelaide, is one of its best growing areas in the world. This is an impressive one, zesty with the typical Riesling spoonful of honey taste (but not sickly sugary!!! ie it is “Dry”). Give it a try with Thai food,,,ripper.
Be wary of Restaurants incorrectly spelling Riesling as “Reisling”. It happens more often than should be the case,,,and would you trust a steak house that offers you a “t bone staek” on their set menu.
