Mitch’s Roundup: Dan Murphys 16 June 2011

This will be my general round up of what I think is worth trying in the Dan Murphys special: Dan Murphy’s 16 June 2011

The Majella Musician is a top wine. Certain well reputed wine experts rate it as one of the best value reds in Australia. A single bottle at $16.70? you are saving about $1.30 on the normal price, which isn’t huge. Nevertheless, it is one to try as a solid fruit forward impressive fat wine for the bbq or roast dinner.Open it, pour a glass and leave it all to sit for about 30 minutes to get it breathing properly.

Would I buy it? yep, but no rush as this isn’t a huge saving on the regular price.

The Penfolds Koonunga Hill and Jacobs Creek: Not bad for a cheapies, but both start well and leave that chemically/metallic cheap wine taste. Probably take the Jacobs creek cabernet sauvignon if pressed. The penfolds is like one of those 30 second music samples you get, good for few seconds but you know you’re not getting the whole thing.

Warburna Botrytis Semillon- no sale. If you want a dessert wine from the Riverina for 10 just get the De Bortoli Vat 9 whenever you want.

Saltram Mamre Brook Barossa Shiraz- pretty good wine if you wanna spend $20. Yes big name and part of Fosters (now Treasury Wine Estates), but you can get a Mountadam shiraz for $15 and it’ll be just as good.

It isn’t so much a “special” becuase it has only recently gone up in price from $20, so this is really getting back to its real price.

Australia is the land of a few very big wine companies, TWEs portfolio is a little who’s who of wines and it will blow you away how many wine producers are owned by the same company.

Cow Bombie and Seven Degrees- try finding this anywhere else but Dan Murphys!!! you wont because it’s one of their own contract wines. Coles (owner of First choice) and Woolworths (owner of Dan Ms ) have quite a few own brands, basically cleanskins with pretty labels and higher prices.  Maybe Im totally wrong and it is a  great wine, but if I want a cleanskin, I’ll buy a cleanskin.

Omni- pretty good value at $7.20, they deliver consistent wines and worth a shot if you are looking for a sparkling wine.

So my buys would be: the musician, and jacobs creek cab sauv OR chardonnay and Omni.
